Facebook Beta 5.2.0.3 - app

Facebook Beta is an early version of Microsoft's next Facebook app for Windows Phone. The app is free to download and use and can be run side-by-side with the existing Facebook for Windows Phone app.

What can you do with Facebook Beta?

Although it's not a final release, Facebook Beta packs in a lot of features that allow you to post to Facebook, chat, and follow what your friends are posting.

Just like the original Facebook client for Windows Phone, you can post status updates, access messages, check your news feed, upload photos, access events, view notifications and more.

Facebook Beta includes some features that set it apart from the official iOS and Android versions of the service. For instance, you can customize your lock screen with photos pulled from your Facebook albums, get toast notifications to alert you of Facebook activity even when the app isn't running (though this feature didn't always seem to work in our tests), and see live tile updates.

Other neat features of Facebook Beta that are not present in the standard client are the ability to pin pages/groups to your start screen and (finally!) the ability to share stories from friends.

The chat and messaging features of Facebook Beta are still not as advanced as they are in the iOS and Android versions. Disappointingly, you can't attach voice or photos into messages or see photos that have been uploaded to group chats.

How does Facebook Beta handle?

Facebook Beta is a little easier to get around than the existing Facebook app for Windows Phone. The user interface is much more common to the iOS and Android versions so if you're familiar with those you'll be able to pick up and start using Facebook Beta without too much bother.

The options menu and chat windows pop out from either side of the screen so you don't have to swipe across and go hunting for the option or contact you want.

How does it look?

Facebook Beta looks a lot more modern and stylish than the standard version. Although it appears more like other mobile versions of the Facebook app, it retains the 'flat' feel of the Windows Phone UI, making it easy on the eye.

The app seems much faster to load than the previous version, and you seemingly are no longer confronted with that awful 'resuming' screen when restarting the Facebook Beta app.

Although performance seems OK, Facebook Beta is still in development stage so of course you'll notice some strange behavior (patchy toast notifications and live tile updating are examples).

The verdict

Overall, Facebook Beta seems like an improvement on Microsoft's previous Facebook app for Windows Phone. The design is easier on the eye, and the new features are genuinely useful.

If Microsoft can iron out some of the performance and stability issues, this could one day become the best Facebook app for mobile.

VLC for Android 0.1.4 Beta - app

VLC for Android is a version of the popular media player for mobile devices running the Google OS.

This version of VLC for Android is still in development stages and, as a message warns when you launch the app, it is not stable and can cause problems if you don't know what you're doing with it. We experienced crashes on several occasions, and in one instance it froze our Motorola Xoom completely in testing.

When it's working, VLC for Android makes for a good alternative to the Android media player. It handles a wider range of file formats (audio, video, and streaming media), and has the same minimalist interface as the desktop version.

The video player window in VLC for Android is well designed, playing video at full screen resolution with gesture-based controls for changing volume and brightness settings. You can scrobble through videos simply by sliding your finger across the screen.

Video-wise, VLC for Android supports a range of formats and playback of supported formats is generally very smooth. However, HD video is not officially supported and we found watching high definition movies to be impossible due to lag, or simply getting a black screen.

VLC for Android performs better for handling audio files, with simple player controls and a widget giving you basic controls from your home screen.

There's no question that VLC for Android is very rough around the edges, and you'll encounter problems if you want to play HD video. However, as an early build it shows signs of emulating the success of the desktop version of VLC.

BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) 8.0.0.94 - app

BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) is the official instant messaging client for BlackBerry devices.

Not only can you send instant messages with BlackBerry Messenger with images, video, voice notes, but you can also use BBM to make free voice calls on your BlackBerry device. The latest version of Blackberry Messenger allows you to seamlessly switch from a BBM conversation to a BBM Voice chat.

You can share stuff with BBM such as events, the song you're listening to, and your current location on a map. The app makes for a good alternative to SMS because you don't need to pay per message. Instead, communication is made via your 3G or WiFi internet connection.

Using BlackBerry Messenger is a real joy, thanks to its well ordered user interface. It displays lists of your contacts complete with thumbnail images, and allows you to create groups to chat with different people at the same time. BlackBerry Messenger has a Group Barcode feature, which lets you join a person's group simply by scanning a QR code.

One of the few downsides to note with BlackBerry Messenger is that not all the features are available on all BlackBerry operating systems, so if you're running an older version of BlackBerry OS, you won't get access to all of BBM's tools.

BlackBerry Messenger is a powerful, easy-to-use chat client for your device, and is one of the must-have applications for BlackBerry users.

Foursquare 10.3.1.1376 - app

Foursquare is a location app that allows you to check into locations, compete with friends, and find places to go.

Available for more platforms than competitor Gowalla, and having a larger community, Foursquare should be the best of the location based apps. However, when you first install it, it can be hard to see what to do with it. Once you've found or invited some friends, and checked in at a few locations, Foursquare begins to make sense.

Foursquare allows your to post mini reviews of places you've been to, and collect badges - like achievements in video games. You can see where your friends are too, and as checking in to locations gives you points, you can see who's winning.

Foursquare is a mix between a social game and useful tool. This type of app only works if you can get enough of your friends to use it. You can find places to go and things to do, read user recommendations and sometimes even get free gifts from places you check in.

The interface is simple to navigate, although it's a bit dry in its design. Competing app Gowalla looks much better. Despite this, as long as Foursquare's community is larger there are more places to find, with more user tips and more incentives to become the mayor of your favorite spots. Competing with your friends can be fun, even if it might feel like you're turning your entire life into an RPG.

As it's community grows, Foursquare is becoming a really useful service, great for finding friends and things to do wherever you are.

Photo Studio 1.2.8.131 - app

Photo Studio is a free photo editor for BlackBerry phones. It allows you to correct and adjust images, and apply effects to them while you're on the move.

You can use Photo Studio to edit photos that you take with the camera or that are stored on your BlackBerry already. Once you've loaded the image into Photo Studio it's very easy to work with. The current image is displayed on screen, with a toolbar underneath where you'll find all of Photo Studio's tools.

Among the settings you can tweak in Photo Studio are color, brightness, contrast, hue and saturation. Tweaking is generally done just by moving a slider left or right to adjust the levels. There are also tools for resizing, rotating, and cropping photos, plus a red eye remover.

Users will likely be impressed by the large range of image effects to choose from in Photo Studio, as well as all the different frames you can apply to your photos through the app. It would've been nice to have the ability to add text to images too, but hopefully this will be added to Photo Studio in a future release.

When you're done editing an image in Photo Studio you can either apply the changes you've made to the original image, or save it separately as a screen dimensions image to your memory card.

All in all, Photo Studio is great for making tweaks and corrections to photos you take on your phone.

Scan to Text 2.0.3.36 (BlackBerry 10) - app

Scan to Text Free is a mobile scanner and optical character recognition (OCR) app that allows you to save scans as PDFs and extract text from images.

From print to digital in seconds

Scan to Text Free is a smart app that allows you to scan pages from books, magazines, and hard copy documents and convert them to PDF or text files on your BlackBerry device.

After scanning a document with Scan to Text Free using your phone's camera you have the option to save it as a PDF or extract the text from the document. The app supports multiple pages of PDFs, and you can rearrange pages at your leisure.

Extracted text can be edited before you accept it. This text can then be saved, shared, or copied.

Scan to Text Free supports a wide range of different languages for text recognition. The default is set to English but you can download new language packs for free through the app.

Good reader

The optical character recognition in Scan to Text Free is quite impressive. Roughly 90% of the texts we tested using the app were reproduced perfectly. The application automatically straightens and sharpens up images you've taken, so that even if your photos aren't perfect Scan to Text Free has a good chance of being able to read it. Still, it struggles with glossy print at times, especially when there's a direct light source bouncing off the page.

One of the great things about Scan to Text Free is that it all the text recognition processing is done offline through the app itself rather than via a server. This means it won't use up precious mobile data. Also, captured images aren't stored on your photos folder, so they won't take over your album!

Scan to Text Free is a well designed app that encapsulates the BlackBerry 10 user experience. From capturing and previewing to extracting and saving, the interface walks you through the process in a seamless way. Even if you've never used an OCR app before you'll pick it up in no time.

The verdict

Scan to Text Free is an excellent OCR reader and PDF scanner for BlackBerry. It's not 100% accurate all the time but it does a fine job of text recognition and has some useful features.

Google Wallet 2.0-R141 - app

Google Wallet is an NFC payment system that allows you to make purchases with supported devices.

The idea behind Google Wallet is to allow you to pay for purchases using a supported device at participating businesses. Instead of pulling out a card or cash, you simply tap your device to a payment kiosk and the app automatically loads and allows you to pay through an app. Connected to your Google Play account, you can see your purchases and receipt on the device.

Using Google Wallet is easy, but the difficulty is finding a business that supports NFC payments. The other problem is many carriers block the use of the app so while you can download the app, you are not able to access it on your device.

Google Wallet is a great app, but is stunted by carriers.

uTorrent 1.20 - app

With uTorrent you can exchange files with millions of users worldwide.

Unlike uTorrent Remote, which downloads files via the uTorrent software on your PC, this uTorrent client for Android downloads files directly to your mobile device.

Programs like uTorrent and BitTorrent are almost the fastest methods to distribute files over the internet. Millions of users across the world use the software to download media and files, which is now also possible via mobile phones with Android.

uTorrent works in a very simple way: after installation, a smart menu appears, from where you can search for torrents and see what's being downloaded. On the left side of the screen you will find include a search button and the app's settings.

As with aTorrent uTorrent nestles in the system and connects itself with your phone's browser. Visit a web page with torrents on it and they will appear as clickable links. You can just click on a link to open the torrent in the uTorrent app right away.

Although it works well, uTorrent eats system memory on your Android device and there's the chance that files will fail when downloading them. This is not such a problem in aTorrent, though it's an alternative that's loaded with ads.

Despite a tendency to slow your phone down, uTorrent offers a very simple way to download torrents on your phone.

Google Translate 3.0.1 - app

Google Translate for Android brings all of the utility of Google’s online service to your mobile phone for instant translations when on the go.

The translation app for Android is really simple to use and if you have ever tried it online, you’ll have no problems at all. Google Translate supports the same languages as the original â€" over 64 in fact â€" so all you have to do is choose your language combination, write what you want to say and Google Translate will give you the translation immediately.

Depending on the language combination, Google Translate will also display some grammatical information and a text-to-speech feature which will read the translation out loud.

The Google Translate app also makes it very easy to copy and paste the translations. You’ll have access to past translations via the History option, while the SMS Translation feature will immediately offer you the ability to translate any of the messages in your inbox.

One of Google Translate’s coolest aspects, however, is Conversation Mode, a feature that lets you speak, translates what it hears and plays it back to the listener in their own language. It's not always perfect, but it's available in 17 languages and is fast and fun to use.

Google Translate is the perfect app for multilingual Android users.

Tango 3.2.68852 - app

Tango allows you to make video calls and send instant messages for freeon your Android phone.

Voice and video calling with Tango is free (for now, at least) and it works over both WiFi and 3G/4G networks.

Tango automatically sifts through your phone's contacts to determine which of your contacts are using Tango (in much the same way as WhatsApp and Viber do), and displays all of these contacts very clearly so you can quickly start chatting with them. You get the option to invite someone via text message or email if you like.

Of course, the video calling functionality only works if you have a front-facing camera on your device. If you do though, you're in for a real treat because both the video and audio quality of Tango video calls are excellent, with less lag compared to similar applications.

Tango includes a few handy extra features, such as the ability to add fun filters and animations to your video chats. You can even play games together during calls if you get bored!

Tango is a very good video chat app for Android, which makes it easier to maintain face-to-face contact with your family and friends.

YouTube 5.3.24 - app

The YouTube Android app offers a comfortable and watch clips from the popular online video repository.

You can comfortably view YouTube videos in portrait mode while checking out info, related videos and comments at the same time. You can access extra sharing options directly while watching the video.

Rotate your phone to landscape mode and YouTube will automatically resize the movie to full screen and remove all of the rest of the page elements. The player controls are kept perfectly simple. In fact, all you can do is touch the screen to pause and slide your finger along the timeline to fast forward and rewind.

Upload video to YouTube

The YouTube app for Android makes it very easy for you to quickly grab and upload videos to YouTube from your phone. All you do is hit the video camera button, record your footage, then the app will upload it to your YouTube channel in the background. You can also select existing videos to upload from your SD card.

YouTube is generally included by default within the Android operating system. However, it's well worth downloading the official app because it means you can always have the very latest version of the application.

YouTube may be default, but it's still the best video player available.

Candy Crush Saga 1.21.0 - app

Candy Crush Saga is super-sweet free strategy game for iOS. Tiffi and Mr. Toffee need your help!

Gameplay

Candy Crush is a puzzle game where brightly colored candy takes the starring role.

Your task is to link a minimum of 3 candies, vertically or horizontally, so that they will disappear from the game grid.

Successfully doing this will allow you to accumulate points, which will give you access to new levels. It's a well-structured game and the difficultly level is well calibrated, so you'll get just the right degree of a challenge.

Playability

When you're playing Candy Crush, it's important not to get stressed by the time limits. If you do, you're likely to hit a bomb at a crucial point, loosing the game completely. Keep cool, and solve the puzzle before the time runs out!

Graphics and sound

Candy Crush, as you might expect, is bright, colorful and cute. That said, we think the graphics and sound are second-rate - it looks cheap and gameplay is jumpy and ragged, which is completely unnecessary and a real pity.

Conclusion

Candy Crush is an overwhelmingly popular game. It's quite likely lots of your friends are playing and sharing their progress on Facebook, so we can't blame you for wanting a go.

That said, we think Candy Crush Saga is a whole lot of hype over nothing. The gameplay is cliched and overdone, the graphics are poor and the whole game looks second rate. If you're looking for a cute timewaster for iPhone, you can do much better.

FIFA 14 1.3.2 - app

FIFA 14 finally comes free on iOS. EA puts the strongest emphasis on Ultimate Team, whereas some of the other game modes are only available through in-app purchases. FIFA 14 has a great game interface and new touch controls.

Ultimate Team and in-app purchases

FIFA 14 allows you to play matches in Ultimate Team, Games of the Week, Support Your Club, Penalty Shootout, and Online modes.

The modes let you challenge other players all over the world through its multiplayer function. Try to beat them and climb the worldwide leaderboard!

Manager, Tournament and Kick Off modes, however, are only unlockable via in-app purchases.

Just like in the PC and console versions FIFA 14 for iPhone also brings back Match of the Day, a function that lets you reflect on the events of real life games from every single team. You can see injuries, if players are on form, or changes to tactics; these are reflected in the game from time to time with corresponding updates to the team lineup.

FIFA 14 for iOS is strongly in favor of Ultimate Team mode, which lets you create and manage your virtual team. You can participate in auctions to buy and sell players, trying to grow your team and the camaraderie between your players. And of course, you can participate in games and competitions with your Ultimate Team. If you win, you get points and virtual money to spend so that you can buy new cards to improve your team.

FIFA 14 supports 33 leagues (Serie A, La Liga, Premier League, Bundesliga...), more than 600 fully-licensed teams, over 16,000 players and as many as 34 stadiums, faithfully recreated in the app. And just as you can on the console version, you can get get trophies and achievements when you fulfill certain objectives.

The game interface has been completely re-done in the style and design of the new PC version, which offers improved usability and navigation through the menus.

New touch controls

FIFA 14 also introduces a new type of touch control, based on gestures, swiping and tapping. The idea is interesting, but it does requires a bit of practice to feel confident with the controls. To this end, the game includes an in-depth tutorial that explains how to use the new controls.

If you prefer the old and classic virtual joypad, you can still select it from the options menu. During our test, we got a better feeling with this set of controls rather than with the new gesture-based ones.

Slightly better graphics, excellent soundtrack

The 3D graphics are good quality and the animations of the players, although a bit slow, are compelling. Maybe a touch of fluidity and increase in the pace of the action would give an edge to the title. Despite these minor setbacks, you can definitely see major improvements compared to the previous release.

The music on the menu is excellent, but it isn't new: EA has always looked after the entire soundtrack of the FIFA franchise.

The sound effects during the match are pretty average and not much different than the previous release. The presence of the commentary (in English, Italian, Spanish, German and French), however, makes the game more exciting.

FIFA is free, at last!

FIFA 14 is an innovative release of the EA game. The freemium approach allows you to play the best soccer simulator for iOS for free. In the end, you may decide to buy the other modes (Manager, Tournament and Kick Off), which can greatly increase the depth of play.

The default modes, however, allow a fair level of challenge, and are excellent (especially Ultimate Team) in online multiplayer mode.

The game tutorial is made with great attention to detail and is really useful for any mode.

The new touch controls are a big gamble for EA, since they drastically affect gameplay. Personally, I still prefer the feeling from the old virtual joypad, which is selectable from the options - I think it's the best way to make the most of the simulator gameplay that EA has to offer.

Although there are no obvious improvements in the sound effects, or to some of the animations which affect the speed and pace of the action, FIFA 14 remains an essential title for lovers of soccer simulations for their iPhone or iPad. And it's free! So what are you waiting for?

YouTube HD 3.2.1.0 - app

YouTube HD is a free YouTube client for Windows Phone which offers a very complete experience of the video portal, including options for uploading and downloading videos.

A world of videos at your fingertips

YouTube HD is an official YouTube app, yet it still offers access to most of your favorite features of the web site - and more!

You can search for and browse YouTube videos, channels and playlists with access to the full catalog. The app helps you discover new videos you might like by displaying Hot and Trending videos.

You can sign into your YouTube account with YouTube HD to give you access to even more useful content, such as your Play History, Playlists, and the latest videos from the channels you subscribe to.

What's great about YouTube HD compared with many other YouTube apps for Windows Phone is that it supports both downloading and uploading of YouTube videos. You can download any video on YouTube through the app just by clicking on an icon and it is then saved to your list of downloaded videos for offline viewing. YouTube HD supports background downloading too, so you can continue to explore videos while others are downloading.

YouTube HD allows you to record and upload videos through the app, too. Unfortunately, you can only upload videos that you've recorded through the application though, and not those that you already have stored on your Windows Phone device.

A true Windows Phone experience

One of the criticisms of Microsoft's currently-unavailable YouTube app was that it didn't really integrate with the Windows Phone experience and the interface was more like the YouTube mobile web app than a standalone Windows Phone app (the same can be said of Esunoka's YouTube app, too. However, YouTube HD is built around an interface that mirrors that of the Windows Phone OS.

You can navigate to various parts of YouTube from the home screen of the app, which is laid out as a series of tiles. Sure, some of the tiles take you to more or less the same section as others (i.e. they are just a swipe away from that section), but it's a comfortable enough user experience and it's nice that the developer has tried to replicate the feel of Windows Phone.

YouTube HD even gives you the option to customize the style of the tiles on its main menu. It doesn't go as far as allowing you to reorder the tiles, however.

Pin your favorite content

YouTube HD supports - in part at least - pinning of YouTube HD to your phone's home screen. You can pin subscriptions, favorites, watch later lists and playlists, giving you quick access to this content. However, once you've loaded this content via the home screen, there's no way to navigate to the main menu of YouTube HD without exiting out and restarting the app.

The verdict

YouTube HD is a fully featured YouTube experience that sits well with the Windows Phone look and feel. The inclusion of a downloading option will make it a good alternative to the official YouTube mobile web app for many people.

Google Translate 2.0.1 - app

Google Translate for iPhone is a useful app that serves as a translator for all sorts of situations.

What can the app do?

With more than 50 different languages currently available, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a widely spoken language not covered by Google Translate. Much like Google Translate for Android, the iPhone app is simple to use. Just choose the language you’ll be typing in and the language you want to translate into, and start typing a word or phrase. That’s all it takes to get your translation with Google Translate.

A select number of languages also have an audio feature in Google Translate, where you can have the translation spoken by a native speaker to know exactly what it sounds like. This is great for language learners. It can also be used in a situation where you need to speak to someone who doesn’t speak your own language if you’re concerned about butchering the pronunciation.

What else can Google Translate be used for?

Google Translate is also wonderful for deciphering emails and documents you receive that are in foreign languages. In addition, if you’re trying to translate from English to Spanish (or vice versa) there is a very neat feature that allows you to actually speak the sentence you want translated and to get a written and spoken response translated into the other language.

Of course, like most non-human translators, Google Translate is not always accurate in its offerings. Expect some translations to be a little off the mark or to not account for gender differences in languages that make those distinctions. These are problems that will occur with any non-human translation program, however. If you’re looking to translate a document just for your own comprehension, however, Google Translate generally does a good enough job for you to get the gist of what’s been written.

Google Translate is a wonderful translation option for your mobile device, with lots of languages to choose from.

Angry Birds 3.4.1 - app

Angry Birds is an addictive bird-flinging casual game, which has proved one of the most popular iOS games of all time.

Your mission in this raucous iPhone game is to destroy all the green pigs by catapulting birds at them. This wouldn't be too difficult, except for the fact the hogs are holed up inside fortified castles which you need to smash into in order to enter. As the levels progress, these fortresses become ever more hard to break down, so Angry Birds requires a bit of lateral thinking as well as a steady aim.

To fire a bird you simply pull back on the catapult, adjust the trajectory, then release your finger. You can shoot four birds per turn, and if you don't destroy every pig then you'll have to start the level again. There are dozens of levels, so it'll be a long time before you get bored of Angry Birds.

As well as being great fun to play, Angry Birds looks the part too. Graphics are colorful and fun, and the bird noises and sound effects are hilarious. One of the few criticisms we have of Angry Birds is that it's very repetitive. It would be nice if there were an option to customize levels or characters, for example.

If you feel like playing the game on a larger screen, why not download Angry Birds for PC and play it in Windows?

Overall though, Angry Birds is enjoyable enough to put a smile on the face of even the most sullen iPhone gamer.

Angry Birds HD 3.4.1 - app

If you haven't tried the addictive and mega popular Angry Birds HD game on your iPad yet, then it's about time you did.

Your mission in Angry Birds HD is to destroy all the green pigs by catapulting birds at them. This wouldn't be too difficult, except for the fact the hogs are holed up inside fortified castles which you need to smash into in order to enter. As the levels progress, these fortresses become ever more impenetrable, so Angry Birds HD requires a bit of lateral thinking as well as a steady aim.

To fire a bird you simply pull back on the catapult, adjust the trajectory, then release your finger. You can shoot four birds per turn, and if you don't destroy every pig then you'll have to start the level again. There are dozens of levels spread across several worlds, so it'll be a long time before you get bored of Angry Birds HD.

As well as being great fun to play, Angry Birds HD looks the part too. Graphics are colorful and fun, and the bird noises and sound effects are hilarious.

One of the few criticisms I have of Angry Birds HD is that you're left waiting too long for the level to load again when you retry.

Overall though, Angry Birds HD is enjoyable enough to put a smile on the face of even the most sullen iPhone gamer.

uTorrent 1.19 - app

Tango 3.2.68470 - app

Adobe Reader 11.1.1 - app

If you want to read PDFs on your Android device, Windows favorite Adobe Reader might just be able to come to the rescue.

Adobe Reader for Android is a PDF reader that focuses on simplicity and speed. This app can't do anything amazing, but it will let you read even the largest PDF documents with ease. Crucially, it's also got a great zoom function and quick search, essential for when you are trying to track things down on an- often tiny - mobile screen.

Organizing your documents with Adobe Reader is also a pleasant experience - it automatically detects PDFs on your phone and displays them when you hit the Open button located at the top bar that appears when you touch the screen, or via Adobe Reader's menu options. Your recently read documents will appear here too. It's also in Adobe Reader's top bar that you can share the document you are reading.

Adobe Reader offers you three viewing modes -Fit to screen, Continuous Scroll and Reflow text. Which is the most comfortable depends on the type of document you're reading, but you'll be able to switch easily via the View Mode option under menu. The Adobe Reader bottom bar will change according to what mode you've chosen, allowing you to easily move between pages, or or increase or decrease the size of the font.

Adobe Reader for Android is fast, clear and well-organized - just don't expect anything too fancy.

Google Drive 2.1.1 - app

Google Drive is a productivity application that allows users to access their documents and files from Google's cloud.

If you're a Google Drive on Mac user, you're going to want to download this app for your iOS device. Google Drive for iOS allows users to access their documents from the cloud but there is pretty big limitation, which I'll get to later.

Google Drive's interface is simple and intuitive. The main screen shows quick categories for your documents including starred, recent, and offline. There is also a search bar on the top for quick access. Images are easily viewed by swiping through them.

When you tap on a note or folder, you can view its contents or the document itself. You can also make comments on Google Docs files. Clicking on the small arrow on the right will bring up options for changing permissions and saving for offline viewing.

Unfortunately, Google Drive only allows users to view their documents but not edit them. There is an option to open up your documents in another app for editing but Google should really bake editing into this application to make it truly useful.

In the end, Google Drive is a good first step in bringing Google's cloud service to iOS but its lack of editing features makes it lag behind its Android counterpart.

Angry Birds 3.4.0 - app

Angry Birds is an addictive bird-flinging casual game, which has proved one of the most popular iOS games of all time.

Your mission in this raucous iPhone game is to destroy all the green pigs by catapulting birds at them. This wouldn't be too difficult, except for the fact the hogs are holed up inside fortified castles which you need to smash into in order to enter. As the levels progress, these fortresses become ever more hard to break down, so Angry Birds requires a bit of lateral thinking as well as a steady aim.

Google Talk 10.2.0.38 - app

Google Talk has been tested by Softonic, but it still doesn't have a review in English.

LINE 3.9.4 - app

LINE lets you call, chat and send photos to others for free, from your smartphone or computer.

LINE allows you to make free calls to other users of the service. This includes the ability to make calls between the Android and iPhone versions of LINE. The application is easy to set up, allowing you to register with your phone number or email address (the latter option only gives you access to text chat, though.

The call function of LINE works very well. Although the option to make video calls is missing, the sound quality when making calls is excellent. There is a slight delay in calls both via WiFi and 3G, though the quality is still better than both fring and Skype.

Text chatting in LINE is easy, with support for group chats of up-to 100 people, and a good selection of emoticons to add to your conversations. Unlike WhatsApp, LINE allows you to chat between the desktop and mobile versions of the application.

LINE is a viable alternative to apps like WhatsApp and Viber, allowing you to make free calls on your phone with good audio quality.

Hotspot Shield VPN 1.6.5 - app

Hotspot Shield VPN has been tested by Softonic, but it still doesn't have a review in English.

PlayStation App 1.50.1 - app

The official PlayStation App lets you connect with your friends on PlayStation Network, manage game information, and purchase games, movies, and TV shows through Sony Entertainment Online.

The release of Sony's PlayStation 4 promised connectivity with mobile devices using the PlayStation App. In these early stages, the core functions of the app are working, but additional features will be implemented as the PS4 is updated to support more features.

PSN on your mobile device

A PlayStation Network account is required to use the PlayStation App. It connects to your PlayStation Network account, as well as your other PlayStation devices.

New features include:

  • What's New: recent actions from you and friends on PS3 and PS Vita

  • Notifications: new messages, friend requests, and name requests

  • Invitations: game and party chat invites

  • Game Alerts: game-specific notifications

  • Messages: unified PSN chat

  • Friends list: a list of friends, friend/name requests, and blocked players

  • Connect to PS4: connect to PS4 (second screen currently unsupported)

  • Sony Entertainment Network: purchase games, movies, and TV content

  • Links: links to different information hubs about PlayStation

A solid start that will improve with updates

Since the PlayStation App is connected to PSN, and a PS4 is required to use the full suite of features on the app, the app is currently missing some functionality features. In its current state, it's a great communication tool for friends. The chat options are much better than on the console, and the notifications contain useful information.

The 'Whats New' section could be useful in the PlayStation App, but it delivers slightly too much information. If you have a lot of friends, your feed will quickly become flooded with simple messages indicating that your friends have played a specific game. It seems that when they'll be live streaming games or asking for help in co-op, the feed will become much more content rich.

The PlayStation App is obviously unfinished, considering the lack of second screen support and the fact that online purchased games don't automatically download to your PS4 yet. Once Sony can update the PS4 to support these features, the PlayStation App will supply a better experience for PS users.

A good start with room for improvement

The PlayStation App will improve through updates and improvements to PS4. The amount of content that's displayed will improve as the console matures and more people start using it.

In its early form, the PlayStation App is a great tool that, at the very least, keeps you connected to friends. If you play certain games with friends worldwide, chatting through the PlayStation App might be even faster than email, and the notifications will become even more useful when you're invited to a multiplayer match online.

KakaoTalk 2.0.0.2 - app

KakaoTalk is one of the best VoIP and SMS apps available.

How KakaoTalk works

KakaoTalk started as an SMS service that could connect users from different parts of the world but now it also allows for free voice calls. Using your phone number, KakaoTalk creates a user profile that is connected to it allowing for calls and messages.

You can also create a KakaoTalk profile so other users can find you. For friends who live in different countries, it is easier to use a username than using the general search. The app also allows for group messages and photo sharing.

The Plus Friends feature lets you "connect" with many Korean pop stars which is kind of a gimmick, but shows updates from pop groups in South Korea. KakaoTalk's best use is when you are traveling overseas and still want to connect with friends via Wi-Fi without costly international rates.

Other useful features of KakaoTalk include the ability to send multimedia (photos, and voice and video messages), participate in group chats, and apply voice filters, featuring characters from Talking Tom and Ben.

There's plenty of fun to be had with KakaoTalk, thanks to mobile game add-ons and a wide range of amusing emoticons that you can insert into yor chats.

Fast and functional

The service that KakaoTalk offers over data or Wi-Fi connections is great, since Wi-Fi is usually available in most countries, KakaoTalk is the best way to stay in contact with friends back home through voice and text. It is less bloated than Skype and offers a quick interface and function.

The verdict

KakaoTalk is one of the best SMS and voice apps available.

SoundCloud (for BlackBerry 10) 1.0.71 - app

SoundCloud has been tested by Softonic, but it still doesn't have a review in English.

Twitter 5.0.2 - app

Twitter, the official Android app for the service, has moved into version 3, presenting some pretty major interface changes.

Probably the biggest change to Twitter for Android is the appearance. It's really grown up, losing the multi-access homepage and launching instead straight into your timeline. It looks more sophisticated too, with a streamlined user interface while still using the recognizable blue header and black and white layout.

As far as Twitter for Android goes in terms of features, it parallels the online site, but sticks to the basics. The standard areas exist like the main timeline, @mentions, and your profile, but Twitter added a hashtag "#Discover" feature allowing you to browse what is trending. Tapping on a tweet now shows the @reply, retweet, favorite, or share options and lists who has performed any of the options.

Among Twitter’s nicer features is a cool tool to search your telephone contacts for Twitter users, and varied suggested users for you to add. You can also modify your profile pretty well from the app, while Twitter for Android also lets you create as many public and private lists as you want.

Twitter for Android supports multiple accounts, easily switchable from the taskbar. The configuration settings are still limited, especially in comparison to apps like Plume and Tweetcaster. Even so, if you’re a low-spec Twitter user who likes to keep things simple, the official Twitter app for Android might be right up your street.

Twitter for Android does its job very well, focusing on working like the online site.

Instagram BETA 0.1.0.0 - app

Instagram BETA for Windows Phone allows you to take photos  with your phone, apply a few special effects and share them with family friends through the Instagram network - or via other social networks.

What you can and can't do with Instagram BETA

The official Instagram app for Windows Phone boasts most of the same features and functions as the Instagram client for iOS and Android. That's to say, you can use it to follow your friends' activity on the network, as well as to capture, edit and upload photos.

The significant difference between Instagram BETA for Windows Phone and the iOS and Android versions is that you cannot capture or upload video to Instgram, which is a pity, because it's a fun feature. Of course, this is a Beta release, and the developer promises video recording facilities soon. For now, if you're desperate to add Instagram videos on Windows Phone it's worth trying the non-official 6tag app.

Instagram is renowned for the way it lets you apply filters to your photos to make them seem more cool or artistic. Instagram BETA for Windows Phone includes a range of filters (20 at present).

Other editing tools in Instagram BETA for Windows Phone include Scale and Crop, Rotate, Frame, Blur and Brightness. Unlike the Android version of Instagram there's no auto-straightening tool included.

Smooth look and feel

Instagram BETA features a smart user interface which is straightforward enough to use. Capturing is done via the native camera app on your phone rather than through the app, though it feels like a seamless experience.

There's Live Tile support for notifications so you can see when there has been activity around images you've uploaded or when photos of you have been uploaded. There's no way to customize what type of notifications are pushed to the Live Tile, however.

The verdict

Instagram BETA isn't quite the finished product yet. The lack of video recording support is a let-down, though the app is fine for taking, uploading and editing images, as well as interacting with the Instagram community.

Dropbox 2.3.11 - app

Dropbox is an easy way to sync files between your Android smartphone and computer, allowing you to share and access your files remotely.

If you haven't used the desktop version before, Dropbox for Windows and Dropbox for Mac both add a special folder to your computer, and anything you put in it is automatically uploaded to the web. This can then be accessed from anywhere else by the account owner.

This Android version of Dropbox works a bit differently, in that it'll mostly be used to access Dropbox files from your online account and open them on your phone. This is assuming the file is in a format that's readable by your smartphone, of course. You can also upload and share pictures and videos you take with your phone pretty quickly.

Dropbox's design might seem relatively sparse, but the functionality is there. This latest version even has photo thumbnails and allows you to delete your files, both of which are very convenient. It's also pretty obvious how to use Dropbox from the outset, so the app is very user friendly. If you're not sure, there are plenty of how-to PDFs included with the app to get you going.

Dropbox also features a public folder. This is designed for files you want to share publicly and easily - put your file there and Dropbox will generate a link that lets anyone who has that link to access the file. It's a really smooth and well thought-out system. The free account is limited to two gigabytes of online storage, but that's not too shabby!

For keeping online file backups, sharing and basic access to files on your computer, Dropbox for Android absolutely can't be beat.

Hill Climb Racing 1.12.1 - app

Hill Climb Racing is a combination distance and physics arcade and puzzle game.

The point of the game is to drive as far as possible while keeping the car from flipping over and killing the driver. You have a depleting gas gauge and use the gas and brake to move. Depending on the terrain, you could flip the car very easily, because some environments require you to traverse over big hills.

Hill Climb Racing has car upgrades paid by the coins you collect during each playthrough. The challenge and addictiveness of the game is trying to drive as far as possible while trying not to get defeated by the physics.

Graphics in Hill Climb Racing are simple, but animate very smoothly. There isn't any slowdown and that works to make the gameplay experience really fun. You may get frustrated at certain points, but the game is still fun to play.

Hill Climb Racing is an addictive casual game.

Subway Surfers 1.16.0 - app

Subway Surfers is a Temple Run-style game where you have to escape from a railway inspector angry with you for spraying graffiti over the station.

Keep on running

The objective of Subway Surfers is very simple. You automatically dart up the screen along the train tracks, and must avoid all the obstacles in your path, such as trains, buffers and carts.

Along the way you need to collect coins which can be exchanged in Subway Surfers for special items such as coin magnets, hover boards and even paint-powered jet packs. These power-ups really help to make the game more exciting, and often they are needed in order to overcome a particularly tough part of the game.

The game allows you to challenge your Facebook friends and also gives you the possibility to earn more coins for Subway Surfers by inviting friends via Facebook.

Controls in Subway Surfers

The touch controls in Subway Surfers couldn't be simpler. You can dodge by tapping left or right, jump by swiping upwards, or duck by swiping downwards. Running is done for you, so these touch controls are all you need to worry about. You can activate power-ups simply by running into them then using them to perform special feats.

Vibrant environment

Subway Surfers is a good looking endless running game. The 3D graphics are bright and colorful, and there's plenty of fun and humor in there. Sound effects and music are used to good effect too.

The verdict

Subway Surfers is a fun reworking of the Temple Run format, which is addictive to play and will keep you coming back for more.

Drag Racing 1.6.10 - app

Drag Racing is a simple, yet original, driving game for Android in which you have to beat a single opponent over a short strip of track.

There are a wide variety of real-life cars to choose from in Drag Racing, and the object is to tune them up to keep winning races. By winning races you gain money and respect points, which you can then use to upgrade your car or buy a new one. If you're lacking in respect points you can buy more through an in-app purchase.

The key to winning races in Drag Racing is by shifting gears at the optimum moment. The game controls consist solely of holding the accelerator at the start then tapping the stick shifts on the side of the steering wheel as the RPM goes up.

There are all manner of different races you can enter in Drag Racing. In single-player mode you can choose to race over two distances in four difficulty levels, moving up through levels as you complete them all. Drag Racing's online mode includes, Face to Face, Driver Battle, and even a Bet and Race mode where you can stake respect points on the outcome. There's also a Pro League where you can test your skills against a group of other online drivers.

Graphically, Drag Racing isn't that impressive. The side-on viewpoint and uninspiring animation makes the game look very two dimensional, but at least the sound effects are realistic.

Drag Racing is a fun and addictive Android racing game that's ideal for adrenaline junkies.

Dropbox 3.0 - app

Dropbox is an easy way to sync files between your iPhone and computer, allowing you to share and access your files remotely.

If you haven't used the desktop version before, Dropbox basically adds a special folder to your computer, and anything you put in it is uploaded to the web. This can then be accessed from anywhere else by the account owner. This iPhone version allows you to access your Dropbox files and also upload and share pictures and videos taken with the phone.

Dropbox's design is clean, but very functional. There is nothing fancy about it at all, which is a huge strength. It's immediately obvious how to use Dropbox, and the app is very user friendly. If you're not sure, there are plenty of included PDFs included in the app to get you going.

Dropbox features a public folder, too. This is designed for files you want to share, and you can send friends or coworkers links that will take them directly to what you want to share. It's a really smooth and well thought-out system. The free account is limited to two gigabytes of online storage, but that's still a lot!

For keeping online file backups, sharing and just basic access to essential files on your computer, Dropbox for iPhone is absolutely fantastic.

WhatsApp 2.11.312.0 - app

WhatsApp allows you to send free text messages over the internet, saving you the cost of sending SMS.

You can use WhatsApp to send messages over WiFi or 3G to anyone else with the app installed on their phone. The software works across mobile operating systems (iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, and Nokia) so it will function with contacts who have other versions of WhatsApp installed.

Once set up, WhatsApp is pretty easy to use. Just type and hit Send to post the message. WhatsApp gives you a number of other handy options aside from just sending text. You can attach a picture (taken from your camera or stored on your device), audio, and video. There's also an option to email your chat history.

The Windows Phone version of WhatsApp is a bit more basic than it is on other mobile operating systems. For example, it doesn't save conversation histories and notifications don't work well.

Remember that WhatsApp only works if both people in the conversation have the app installed.

Overall though, WhatsApp makes for a handy way to chat for free on your Windows Phone device.

UC Browser 9.4.0 - app

UC Browser is a quick, sleek internet browser for your Android phone.

There are practically more browsers for Android phones than there are phone models themselves, but if you still haven’t found the one for you, check out UC Browser.

Features

UC Browser has a number of features that help it stand out. For a start, the home page has a selection of quick-access links, helpfully divided into topic areas, like Entertainment and UC's own recommendations. It goes without saying that there's also tabbed browsing, and plenty of tab management options. It's also got a nice window browse function, and a bunch of options that display clearly when your hit the Menu key.

UC Browser also has a number of features that other browsers don’t â€" namely a night mode and share by SMS/Whatsapp. Even so, it doesn’t have any quick features for sharing by other, more common means, like Twitter or Facebook.

Usability

Unfortunately, UC Browser’s main problem is the display - it’s plain ugly. Ok, so it’s clear and easy to read, but webpages viewed with the app look like something from 1993 â€" at first, we thought we had a connection problem! We also had issues displaying video while using UC Browser, but couldn’t tell from the developer’s website which video formats are supposed to be supported.

Conclusion

UC Browser is a mixed bag â€" strong in areas, and weak in others. We think prospective users would be better off waiting an update or two before trying.

What's new

This latest version of UC Browser for Android brings Open Wi-Fi Notification, allowing you to receive a notification when accessing an Open Wi-Fi connection. Loading speed has been optimized, and
Network Issue Processing has been optimized.

Snapchat 4.0.20 - app

Snapchat is the instant photo-sharing app that lets you take photos and send them to friends, who can see them for a maximum of 10 seconds before they're gone forever! With no way to save the photos or view them for longer than the allotted time, Snapchat is the perfect way to share quick snaps with your friends!

Now you see me, now you don't

The concept of Snapchat is really simple: you take a photo with the in-app camera, add up to 40 characters of text or use the pencil to draw in the odd mustache or devil horns, choose how long you want your friends to see the photo (anywhere from 1 to 10 seconds), choose which friends you want to receive it, and hit send.

When you receive a snap, you press and hold the message to view the photo. The timer starts as soon as you click the message, and counts down on the screen even if you're not holding down to view the photo.

The newest features in Snapchat include the option to share videos, as well as Snapchat Stories, which lets your friends view photos an unlimited number of times for up to 24 hours.

Be careful what you share

When you start Snapchat, you use your phone number as an ID and can add friends through your phone contacts or using your Facebook and Twitter accounts. The Snapchat home screen is the camera itself. You can navigate to your notification feed and your contact list using buttons at the bottom left and right of the screen, but you must return to the camera to access one from the other. You can access the settings through the notifications section. It's not obvious at first, but because there are so few options, it's easy to get the hang of quickly.

Snapchat keep images secure by deleting them immediately, but there is no way of knowing if the images are archived somewhere else. There is also the danger of inappropriate images being shared (Snapchat has gotten the reputation of being the perfect 'sexting' app).

A new social network?

What used to be considered a 'sexting' app is now evolving into a social network with its newest feature Snapchat Stories. Regardless, Snapchat is still a good app for sending quick photo messages to friends as a hybrid between a messaging app and a social network.

GO Launcher EX 4.08 - app

GO Launcher EX is a theme customization app that replaces your stock launcher.

Installing GO Launcher EX is easy, but the initial launch includes a lot of placeholders for widgets Go Launcher has developed. These widgets do not do anything except link you to the Google Play Store so you can download them. If you want to customize GO Launcher EX, you will be spending a lot of time initially removing all the associated apps that Go Launcher wants you to install.

There are other launchers that do not include first party in-app links and they may be a better option for users looking for a simpler experience. As a launcher, GO Launcher EX works well, but includes too many "ads" for their own apps.

GO Launcher EX is a good launcher option, but there are less intrusive ones available.

AirDroid 2.0.5.4 - app

AirDroid allows users to connect and control their Android devices from their browser.

AirDroid is a strange app to try and define. While it does wireless file transfers, it's much more than that. What AirDroid basically allows you to do is connect to your Android device over the network to control files, music, photos, video, apps, and even contacts. You can even read and send texts from with the web interface.

AirDroid for Android is only half of the equation. You'll need a web browser to navigate to web.android.com. The website gives you an graphical user interface to control your Android device. You can upload and download files to and from your device, using a windowing system. There's also four virtual desktops for you to multitask using your phone. There are widgets to tell the weather and system information about your device.

In use, AirDroid provided a solid connection for file transfers, although I did notice that the connection and file transfers would pause if your device went to "sleep." If you experience this, you can set your Android device to stay awake by changing the screen time out within the settings.

Within the Android AirDroid app, there are sections that give you an overview about the types of files and tasks that are on your phone. There's a full featured file manager and even a 'Data Counter,' which shows how much data has been used over the network during your current session. There is also a section within AirDroid for app recommendations, though I found them not particularly relevant to any interests.

AirDroid is an impressive app that does more than wirelessly transfer files to your Android device. Its intuitive interface and plethora of features make it an innovative and useful app.

Opera Browser 18 - app

The Opera browser for Android is designed to help you do more online while using less data. Its minimalist user interface is easy to use and the technology behind the Opera browser makes loading pages on your phone much faster.

Opera already has two Android browsers, Opera Mobile and Opera Mini, which are exactly the same - except Mini reroutes traffic through Opera servers to compress data.

This newer Opera browser app is a completely redesigned version. While it retains many of the features of Opera Mobile and Opera Mini, the Opera browser looks more modern and adds some new features.

Features of Opera browser

Like Opera Mini, Opera browser offers a Speed Dial feature, which appears when you launch the app. Here you can place shortcuts to your favorite sites for one-click access. Unfortunately, this is the only way to save favorites in Opera browser, and you can't add bookmarks by starring pages like you can with the older Opera browsers.

Slide across to the right from the Speed Dial and you'll access the Discover section. This offers a selection of latest web content from a variety of sources. You can customize this content based on what country you're in and what subjects you're interested in (food, health, sports, technology, etc.)

One of the most important features of the Opera browser is its Off-Road mode. When this is turned on it all of the sites you visit will be compressed to make them faster to load (using the same technology as Opera Mini). This is great if you're using 2G networks or if you want to save on your data plan.

Other features of Opera browser include:

  • Tabbed browsing

  • Find in page

  • Download manager

  • Page zoom

  • Ability to save pages for offline viewing

  • Omnibar which supports search and address entry with auto-complete
  • What's it like to navigate with?

Using the Speed Dial in Opera browser feels very much like the iOS experience. Shortcuts take the form of icons, which you can pick up and drag around. Like iOS you can create folders out of different web page links by dragging icons on top of each other.

Accessing your browser history with the Opera browser is simpler than it is in most other Android browsers. Slide to the left from the Speed Dial on the front page and you'll see all your recently visited sites listed in a very clear way.

The Android Opera browser allows you to bring up a context menu simply by long-clicking on an item. If it's a link it will give you options for how you want to open it, and if it's an image you'll get the option to save it to your device.

The tabbed browsing experience in the Opera browser is slicker and easier than it is in Opera Mini and Opera Mobile. The panel is larger, meaning you can see more of each page in the preview thumbnail and swiping through the open tabs is smoother. There's a handy drop-down menu next to the tabs for opening a private tab or closing all tabs.

    High speed, low cost

Loading pages using the Opera browser can be very quick, especially in Off Road mode. Although you shouldn't be waiting for pages to load for too long, the inclusion of a progress bar would've been nice for cases where lots of data needs to be downloaded first.

Opera browser users the same WebKit rendering engine used by Safari on iOS and by Google Chrome. It supports web standards very well and during our tests we experienced no problems with pages not displaying properly.

It's a shame that Opera browser doesn't support Flash, or at the very least, Flash Video. If you're a big fan of Flash content you'd be better off with a browser such as Skyfire or Puffin Browser. Check out our post about how to play Flash on Android devices for more.

    The verdict

Opera browser is a smart, user friendly browser that can load web content quickly.
