Nimbuzz 1.1.4.0 - app

Nimbuzz for Windows Phone allows you to save money on SMS charges by chatting for free with your friends via instant messaging.

The Nimbuzz app serves up an attractive user interface through which you can chat with any of your contacts on Windows Live Messenger, Google Talk, Yahoo! Messenger, or Facebook Messenger. Simple sign up with Nimbuzz and add your account details for each messaging service/social network and all your contacts will be imported.

To start chatting, simply tap on a contact and a chat window will open. Now you can exchange text messages for free and even send and receive photos with the other person. The options aren't quite as extensive as WhatsApp, which also allows you to share video, audio and location.

Other options within Nimbuzz include the ability to edit your profile and add status updates, track the history of your conversations, and add favorite contacts for quick access to your best buddies.

The Nimbuzz user interface is very attractive, allowing you to flick between conversations effortlessly, by swiping the screen. There are still some technical issues to be fixed in the app. For instance, we experienced problems with the import of Facebook contacts, testing on a Samsung Omnia W7. For some reason the names of offline Facebook contacts don't display properly.

There's no voice chat in Nimbuzz, but it does provide a simple and elegant way to chat with your contacts for free.

Google Wallet 2.0-R133-v14 - app

Google Wallet is an NFC payment system that allows you to make purchases with supported devices.

The idea behind Google Wallet is to allow you to pay for purchases using a supported device at participating businesses. Instead of pulling out a card or cash, you simply tap your device to a payment kiosk and the app automatically loads and allows you to pay through an app. Connected to your Google Play account, you can see your purchases and receipt on the device.

Using Google Wallet is easy, but the difficulty is finding a business that supports NFC payments. The other problem is many carriers block the use of the app so while you can download the app, you are not able to access it on your device.

Google Wallet is a great app, but is stunted by carriers.

Twitter 4.1.10 - app

Twitter, the official Android app for the service, has moved into version 3, presenting some pretty major interface changes.

Probably the biggest change to Twitter for Android is the appearance. It's really grown up, losing the multi-access homepage and launching instead straight into your timeline. It looks more sophisticated too, with a streamlined user interface while still using the recognizable blue header and black and white layout.

As far as Twitter for Android goes in terms of features, it parallels the online site, but sticks to the basics. The standard areas exist like the main timeline, @mentions, and your profile, but Twitter added a hashtag "#Discover" feature allowing you to browse what is trending. Tapping on a tweet now shows the @reply, retweet, favorite, or share options and lists who has performed any of the options.

Among Twitter’s nicer features is a cool tool to search your telephone contacts for Twitter users, and varied suggested users for you to add. You can also modify your profile pretty well from the app, while Twitter for Android also lets you create as many public and private lists as you want.

Twitter for Android supports multiple accounts, easily switchable from the taskbar. The configuration settings are still limited, especially in comparison to apps like Plume and Tweetcaster. Even so, if you’re a low-spec Twitter user who likes to keep things simple, the official Twitter app for Android might be right up your street.

Twitter for Android does its job very well, focusing on working like the online site.

But how can Shazam know so much about all this music? Well, Shazam 'hears' the song through your iPhone's microphone and uses your mobile Internet connection to compare the sounds it receives with those recorded in a huge online database of music. If it finds a match Shazam will provide you with the information immediately, and offers you the ability to email it to a friend if you wish. While Shazam can't recognize every song in the World, it managed to get most we tested it with.

Google+ 4.1.2.51968121 - app

Google+ is an app for Android smartphones that lets you access your Google+ account on the go from your phone.

Overview

Google+ hasn't been much of a hit with its web version but this revamped mobile version might just make it useful enough for people to actually start using. Its biggest competitor, Facebook, has a good mobile app but it is slow and clunky compared to Google+ for Android.

The features that make Google+ great are still here. Circles makes managing your friends and news feed a breeze. Circles also makes Google+'s privacy settings more transparent, as you can see specifically who you are sharing with. Hangouts and messenger are still here as well but have received some improvements.

New features

The new news feed has been completely redesigned with a more visual approach. Stories and status updates are presented with large pictures, and scrolling down the feed will trigger a slick falling animation for new stories. There is definitely an emphasis on pictures, with text being overlaid on top.

You can still access your profile and pictures. If enabled, pictures can be automatically uploaded to Google+ but won't be shared unless you specify not to. This is great for backing up pictures automatically from your mobile. You can then go back to your photos and share them easily since they are already on Google's servers.

Messenger is still a killer feature and has received an update where users can download photos in the message stream. Messenger in Google+ makes group chatting a viable texting replacement, much like Facebook Messenger.

Another update to Google+ for Android is the ability to start a hangout from the app. In the past, users could only join hangouts. Adding people to a hangout is easy, and its video calling interface makes it a great alternative to Skype. Unfortunately, there is still no option to add silly face tracking animations like on the web version.

In the most recent update to Google+, Google redesigned the app to feature quick access to photos, check ins, sharing links, and status updates in a bar at the bottom. Photos are especially easy to share as they appear automatically when you first launch the app. Google really wants users to share photos using Google+ and has made tagging, sharing, and checking in much more streamlined.

With this new update, Google has made Google+ for Android more than just a social network. It serves as a way to consume news, message friends, video call and automatically back up your photos.

Tango 3.2.65587 - app

Tango allows you to make video calls and send instant messages for freeon your Android phone.

Voice and video calling with Tango is free (for now, at least) and it works over both WiFi and 3G/4G networks.

Tango automatically sifts through your phone's contacts to determine which of your contacts are using Tango (in much the same way as WhatsApp and Viber do), and displays all of these contacts very clearly so you can quickly start chatting with them. You get the option to invite someone via text message or email if you like.

Of course, the video calling functionality only works if you have a front-facing camera on your device. If you do though, you're in for a real treat because both the video and audio quality of Tango video calls are excellent, with less lag compared to similar applications.

Tango includes a few handy extra features, such as the ability to add fun filters and animations to your video chats. You can even play games together during calls if you get bored!

Tango is a very good video chat app for Android, which makes it easier to maintain face-to-face contact with your family and friends.

TuneIn Radio 10.0 - app

TuneIn Radio is an app that lets you listen to radio stations and podcasts from around the world on your Android handset. Simple to use and attractively designed, TuneIn Radio is a first class audio app for Android.

There was a time, not so long ago, when people predicted the demise of radio. Certainly we're more connected these days and the medium might seem old-fashioned to some. But for those of us in the know, radio remains a great way of receiving information, music and news while simultaneously avoiding the distraction of a screen. The TuneIn Radio app for Android lets you enjoy all the advantages of radio on the move, whatever your location.

TuneIn Radio lets you access more than 40,000 radio stations from around the world using your phone's internet connection. Simply search by keyword, category or genre, pick the station you want to listen to and it buffers nearly instantly.

We tested TuneIn Radio with both WiFi and standard data connections and received near-perfect reception with very few breaks in service. Its battery usage was not excessive on the HTC Legend test device we used. In fact, the only criticism we have is that the app doesn't include an option to sort your presets (as bookmarks are known in the TuneIn Radio app).

The app lets you listen to AM/FM radio stations in your locality, as well as downloading and playing popular podcasts. TuneIn Radio is pleasantly designed and simple to use. It also features sleep timers and alarm settings, so you can set your phone to wake you up with your favorite radio show or podcasts.

TuneIn Radio is a well designed and perfectly executed radio app for Android phones. Essential for any radio or podcast fan.

The Google Goggles interface is very simple â€" your phone’s camera is overlaid with a grid. There’s a large button to take the image, a crop function to get a better focus and a flashlight, for using the app in the dark. There aren’t any configuration options â€" instead, you have a getting started tutorial and lots of online help. Google Goggles can be used to get information on bunches of stuff â€" your imagination is pretty much the only limit. The latest version can even scan and search for more information on ads in newspapers and magazines, or solve sudokus! Give it a try, it’s pretty cool.

Candy Crush Saga 1.19.0 - app

Candy Crush Saga is a super-sweet free strategy game for Android. Tiffi and Mr Toffee need your help!

Gameplay

Candy Crush is a puzzle game where brightly colored candy takes the starring role.

Your task is to link a minimum of three candies, vertically or horizontally, so that they will disappear from the game grid.

Successfully doing this will allow you to accumulate points, which will give you access to new levels. It's a well-structured game and the difficultly level is well calibrated, so you'll get just the right degree of a challenge.

Playability

When you're playing Candy Crush, it's important not to get stressed by the time limits. If you do, you're likely to hit a bomb at a crucial point, loosing the game completely. Keep cool, and solve the puzzle before the time runs out!

Graphics and sound

Candy Crush, as you might expect, is bright, colorful and cute. That said, we think the graphics and sound are second-rate - it looks cheap and gameplay is jumpy and ragged, which is completely unnecessary and a real pity.

Conclusion

Candy Crush is an overwhelmingly popular game. It's quite likely lots of your friends are playing and sharing their progress on Facebook, so we can't blame you for wanting a go.

That said, we think Candy Crush Saga is a whole lot of hype over nothing. The gameplay is cliched and overdone, the graphics are poor and the whole game looks second rate. If you're looking for a cute timewaster for Android, you can do much better.

Pou 1.4.5 - app

Pou is a virtual pet game for Android in which you are charged with the task of looking after an alien blob character.

The idea of Pou is that you must look after the little critter, feeding him, playing with him and making sure he is clean. It's a more sophisticated version of the tamagotchi virtual pet toys that were popular in the 90s.

Your Pou character has four 'needs' that need to be met and sustained all the time: Food, Health, Fun and Energy. The level of each of these is represented by an indicator at the top of the screen. You can feed your Pou by dragging and dropping food into its mouth, clean it by rubbing virtual soap on it, and put it to sleep when it gets tired by turning off the light.

The most enjoyable element of Pou is the games section, where playing the games also serves to fill up Pou's Fun meter. There are seven different mini games in here, including a match-three game, dropping food, free fall and a musical Simon remake.

Scoring in the games is rewarded with coins, which you can use to purchase extra items for your Pou (food, clothing, objects, etc.) If you want to fast-track your way to the goodies then you can buy extra coins.

As with any real life pet, the novelty of playing with Pou wears off after a while but this Android game is adorable while it lasts.

Cool new features

The newest version of Viber for Windows 8 Phone includes some interesting features including interactive tiles, notifications on the lock screen, group chat for up to 40 people, and the option of opening conversations from the Start menu.

Easier than dialing 1, 2, 3...

From here, your contact list is automatically imported from contacts saved in your mobile phone that already uses Viber. Use Wifi or 3G for calls

Similar to popular messaging app WhatsApp and LINE, Viber lets you make free calls, send instant messages, share photos or share your location. The quality of calls is generally good but is dependent on your connection speed and strength.

A great competitor

Viber is a great application to rival WhatsApp and LINE for sending messages and making calls using a Wifi or 3G connection. Viber is available for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7, and because it allows you to make calls between them, it's the perfect app for communicating with almost anyone!

Firefox 25 - app

Firefox on Android is designed to provide a smoother web browsing experience on your phone.

How does Firefox look on a mobile?

The browser has a resemblance to Firefox for Windows, but it has an interface suited for mobile devices. For instance, pages can be opened simultaneously in the form of tabs, which you access by tapping the number icon next to the address bar. It's an intuitive way to control multiple tabs without filling the screen.

Like the desktop version, Firefox for Android also includes support for extensions, or Add-ons as they're known in this case. These allow you to power up the Android browser with more functionality.

What makes it different from other mobile browsers?

The variety of Add-ons is great to customize Firefox. Just like the desktop version, the variety of Add-ons can improve web browsing or add social media functions.

Other useful tools that are pre-built into Firefox for Android include a slick bookmarks manager and a start page that will show the top sites you have visited. Zooming in and out of pages has improved a lot since the early alpha release of Firefox. Now you can pinch to zoom, or double-tap for a quick in/out view, making page navigation effortless.

Another neat feature of Firefox for Android is its support for Firefox Sync. This grants you access to all the bookmarks, history and running tabs of the desktop version of Firefox, so you don’t have to worry about entering addresses manually.

Improvements from the beta

Firefox has added Flash support for phones, but this official release doesn't support tablets right now. The browser is fast and meets the same performance of Chrome Beta for Android. The only problem that could occur is installing multiple Add-ons could slow the browser down.

Firefox is a very good Android browser and it makes for a comfortable way to use the web on your phone.

Facebook for Android 3.8 - app

This official Facebook app for Android allows you to post photos and status updates, and keep up with your friends' activity on the go.

The main page in Facebook for Android gives you the option to view different parts of your network, including News feed, friends, photos, inbox, profile and friend requests.

The bottom section of this page displays latest photos from friends in an attractive sliding viewer. Viewing latest notifications can be done simply by sliding up the bar from the bottom.

The news feed is obviously the main section, and this can be navigated by scrolling up and down. Clicking on a story allows you to like or comment on it.
Your wall works in the same way as it does on the Facebook site. You can also view and write messages within the app.

The Facebook app also allows you to take and upload photos, which is a really well integrated feature - it really couldn't be done any better.

There's even a button to instantly add it to an existing album once you've taken it. Viewing upcoming events is also a pleasant experience. Facebook for Android displays events in a vertical timeline, allowing you to see very clearly exactly what's coming up.

The app offers a pretty stripped down Facebook experience You can't view or upload video using this app, nor use any of your Facebook applications.
It would also be nice to have a feature to sync Facebook events to the Android calendar, like you can do in Facebook for iPhone.

This Facebook application is promising, and so far is slick and fast moving. However, it is missing a few features to make it a full Facebook experience.

Aldiko Book Reader 3.0.2 - app

Aldiko Book Reader allows you to turn your phone into a mobile ebook reader. You can download electronic books online and store them in a virtual library on the app.

The collection of titles available to download through Aldiko Book Reader is immense. You can choose from thousands of free and paid-for ebooks from the store. Currently, the selection on offer is based around the collections from Feedbooks.com, All Romance Ebooks, Smashwords and O'Reilly. There's a good mix of genres in Aldiko Book Reader, and plenty of free eBooks to download.

The Aldiko Book Reader store boasts a handy search tool, but unfortunately books are not categorized very well. You cannot browse titles by genre, which is very frustrating if you're a fan of a particular kind of book. It's not completely disordered though, and Aldiko highlights picks such as the New York Times Bestsellers, or a topical collection.

Each book available through Aldiko Book Reader has its own description and image, though you'll need to leave the app in order to view reader reviews.

Managing books you've downloaded in Aldiko Book Reader is a delight. The attractive, iBooks-esque library that houses your ebooks can be ordered by title, author, rating, recent reads, recently finished or recently added.

The viewer itself in Aldiko Book Reader blends the simplicity of flicking side to side to turn pages with several useful features that can be accessed with just a tap of the screen. Tools include text, brightness and orientation controls, plus bookmarking, sharing, a Day/Night mode Go To... option, and one-click access to the contents page.

Although its collection isn't as big as that of Wattpad, Aldiko Book Reader has a nicer user interface, which makes for a very pleasant Android reading experience.

Camera360 1.6.0.0 - app

Camera360 is an essential app for Windows Phone 8. It adds a new dimension to the already fantastic camera that Windows Phone 8 devices already have. Camera360 allows you to add real-time effects, edit images and organize your photos in an attractive and, more importantly, functional way.

Effects, frames and shot configurations

Camera360 substitutes the default camera function on Windows Phone 9 and adds lots of new features.

From Camera360's wheel-like menu, you've got access to 6 predefined image modes: Auto, Portrait, Scenery, Food, Night and Microspur. You also have access to flash controls (front and back) and white balance.

That's not all. From the main menu, you can apply up to 6 frames and a total of 23 effects. These effects and frames are applied in real time, so you can see how the final article will look before you've even taken the photo.

Camera360 also organizes the photos you have stored on your phone in a very original way - like a calendar. From that menu you can then access any photo you want and edit it to your taste.

Lastly, Camera360 lets you share your photos on social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Evernote, etc...) and personalize the message.

Digital camera-like menus

Camera360's wheel-like menus made us think of the menus you find on digital cameras - the ones that let you pick the shooting mode. It's very practical, although sometimes it's a little difficult to maneuver with your finger.

In all other aspects, Camera360 is a great example of usability. All the menus are accessible from the main menu and shouldn't cause you any problems at all.

Quality results

Camera360 works well and gives some really great results. The fact that you can see how the photo will turn out before you take it is really fantastic.

The only thing we missed was that the app doesn't support video.

An unmissable app

We think Camera360 is absolutely essential on any Windows Phone 8. It's good to look at, works well and really multiplies your options when you're taking and editing photos. The only reason not to install it and do away with the native camera app is that it still doesn't support video. Other than that, it's a solid 10.

LockOnMessaging is a tool that allows you to lock your SMS messaging on your Symbian device.

This Symbian security app allows you to define a password and apply this to your messaging app and lock screen, meaning that the password needs to be entered to access. It's simple to configure and there's an option to define the length of time before the lock screen password is needed. The Bible app for BlackBerry allows you to read the Holy Bible on your mobile phone.

Powered by the free online Bible, YouVersion.com, this app makes it very easy to study and explore the Good Book on your device. Its clear user interface allows you to quickly search for a particular keyword or passage, or browse by book.

Reading passages in the Bible app is very comfortable, and your experience is heightened by the ability to bookmark verses, share them via Twitter and Facebook, and even exchange notes on particular verses. There are options for changing the font and the size of the text, but unfortunately you can't change the text or background colors.

The Bible app for BlackBerry includes a feature called Plans, which allows you to learn the Bible at your own pace. You choose a plan based on what you want to learn, then follow daily reading schedule in order to aid your progression. The Live section of the Bible app lets you search for meetings, events and agendas by entering the name of a group, city or postcode.

The Bible app proves to be a very accessible, interactive solution for reading the scriptures on your BlackBerry.

Opera Browser 16.0.1212.65583 - app

The Opera browser for Android is designed to help you do more online while using less data. Its minimalist user interface is easy to use and the technology behind the Opera browser makes loading pages on your phone much faster.

Opera already has two Android browsers, Opera Mobile and Opera Mini, which are exactly the same - except Mini reroutes traffic through Opera servers to compress data.

This newer Opera browser app is a completely redesigned version. While it retains many of the features of Opera Mobile and Opera Mini, the Opera browser looks more modern and adds some new features.

Features of Opera browser

Like Opera Mini, Opera browser offers a Speed Dial feature, which appears when you launch the app. Here you can place shortcuts to your favorite sites for one-click access. Unfortunately, this is the only way to save favorites in Opera browser, and you can't add bookmarks by starring pages like you can with the older Opera browsers.

Slide across to the right from the Speed Dial and you'll access the Discover section. This offers a selection of latest web content from a variety of sources. You can customize this content based on what country you're in and what subjects you're interested in (food, health, sports, technology, etc.)

One of the most important features of the Opera browser is its Off-Road mode. When this is turned on it all of the sites you visit will be compressed to make them faster to load (using the same technology as Opera Mini). This is great if you're using 2G networks or if you want to save on your data plan.

Other features of Opera browser include:

  • Tabbed browsing

  • Find in page

  • Download manager

  • Page zoom

  • Ability to save pages for offline viewing

  • Omnibar which supports search and address entry with auto-complete
  • What's it like to navigate with?

Using the Speed Dial in Opera browser feels very much like the iOS experience. Shortcuts take the form of icons, which you can pick up and drag around. Like iOS you can create folders out of different web page links by dragging icons on top of each other.

Accessing your browser history with the Opera browser is simpler than it is in most other Android browsers. Slide to the left from the Speed Dial on the front page and you'll see all your recently visited sites listed in a very clear way.

The Android Opera browser allows you to bring up a context menu simply by long-clicking on an item. If it's a link it will give you options for how you want to open it, and if it's an image you'll get the option to save it to your device.

The tabbed browsing experience in the Opera browser is slicker and easier than it is in Opera Mini and Opera Mobile. The panel is larger, meaning you can see more of each page in the preview thumbnail and swiping through the open tabs is smoother. There's a handy drop-down menu next to the tabs for opening a private tab or closing all tabs.

    High speed, low cost

Loading pages using the Opera browser can be very quick, especially in Off Road mode. Although you shouldn't be waiting for pages to load for too long, the inclusion of a progress bar would've been nice for cases where lots of data needs to be downloaded first.

Opera browser users the same WebKit rendering engine used by Safari on iOS and by Google Chrome. It supports web standards very well and during our tests we experienced no problems with pages not displaying properly.

It's a shame that Opera browser doesn't support Flash, or at the very least, Flash Video. If you're a big fan of Flash content you'd be better off with a browser such as Skyfire or Puffin Browser. Check out our post about how to play Flash on Android devices for more.

    The verdict

Opera browser is a smart, user friendly browser that can load web content quickly.

    ZombieBooth 4.19 - app

ZombieBooth has been tested by Softonic, but it still doesn't have a review in English.

    Pou 1.4.3 - app

    WhatsApp 2.11.282.0 - app

WhatsApp allows you to send free text messages over the internet, saving you the cost of sending SMS.

You can use WhatsApp to send messages over WiFi or 3G to anyone else with the app installed on their phone. The software works across mobile operating systems (iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, and Nokia) so it will function with contacts who have other versions of WhatsApp installed.

Once set up, WhatsApp is pretty easy to use. Just type and hit Send to post the message. WhatsApp gives you a number of other handy options aside from just sending text. You can attach a picture (taken from your camera or stored on your device), audio, and video. There's also an option to email your chat history.

The Windows Phone version of WhatsApp is a bit more basic than it is on other mobile operating systems. For example, it doesn't save conversation histories and notifications don't work well.

Remember that WhatsApp only works if both people in the conversation have the app installed.

Overall though, WhatsApp makes for a handy way to chat for free on your Windows Phone device.

    Voxer Walkie-Talkie PTT 1.3.1.0017 - app

Voxer is a cross-platform app that can turn your Android smartphone into a walkie-talkie.

There are a lot of mobile apps that let you communicate with other people. With the ability to voice chat, make audio recordings and text chat over Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G and more, Voxer is a great addition to this group.

Similar to Viber and Skype when it comes to voice chatting and call management, Voxer also incorporates text chatting like WhatsApp, making it a very comprehensive app.

You can log into Voxer by either creating an account based on your email address or by connecting to Facebook. If you go the Facebook route, Voxer will immediately let you know which of your Facebook friends who have iPhone and Android smartphones are already Voxer users.

From there, all you have to do is click on the name of a Voxer user you want to talk to. You can opt to send them a text message or else record audio for them. If they're using Voxer at the same time as you, they'll get the message immediately and you'll be able to chat back and forth with them using the Push to Talk feature just like a walkie-talkie. If they're offline, you can record an audio message that they'll receive once they log in next. In addition to one-on-one chatting, you can also do a group chat with Voxer.

Voxer's sound quality is adequate, although slightly tinny. This largely depends on the connection everyone involved has. If you want to practice before talking to someone in real-time, click on the "Team Voxer" friend. You can test run audio recordings and text conversations before jumping into talking with actual contacts.

Voxer is a great all-in-one text, voice chat and audio recording app.

GO Launcher EX 4.06 - app

GO Launcher EX is a theme customization app that replaces your stock launcher.

Installing GO Launcher EX is easy, but the initial launch includes a lot of placeholders for widgets Go Launcher has developed. These widgets do not do anything except link you to the Google Play Store so you can download them. If you want to customize GO Launcher EX, you will be spending a lot of time initially removing all the associated apps that Go Launcher wants you to install.

There are other launchers that do not include first party in-app links and they may be a better option for users looking for a simpler experience. As a launcher, GO Launcher EX works well, but includes too many "ads" for their own apps.

GO Launcher EX is a good launcher option, but there are less intrusive ones available.

While other versions of the app allow for phone calls, Viber on BlackBerry only supports messaging and picture sharing. As a communication tool, Viber is best when used as a phone calling app with the texting part of the app being useful, but not as useful as other more dedicated apps.

    Firefox Aurora 26.0 a2 - app

Firefox Aurora for Android is a pre-beta browser release of Firefox for Android.

Firefox Aurora provides a preview into the changes for Firefox for Android. The biggest addition to Firefox Aurora is the ability to install web applications. They work just like regular apps but rely on Firefox Aurora's rendering engine. This creates an ecosystem between Mozilla's products.

Given that this is a pre-release, Firefox Aurora is very laggy and buggy. The browser loads web pages quickly enough but using apps from the Firefox Marketplace really slows the program down. While there Firefox Aurora didn't crash much, there is considerable lag navigating its interface.

Applications from the Firefox Marketplace work well and act as stand-alone apps, placing an icon on your Android's homescreen. There aren't many apps available in the marketplace but that will change as Mozilla grows its app store.

Overall, Firefox Aurora provides a usable preview into the future of Firefox on Android but it's lag will prevent it from becoming your default browser.

    Instagram 4.2.4 - app

Instagram lets you take photos with your iOS device, apply a few special effects and share them with family friends on its own social network - or via other social networks.

What can you do with Instagram?

You take your pictures, add a customized filter, and post it to Instagram’s community or through Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare or Tumblr. Through the Instagram app, you can give “likes” and give or receive comments on your pictures.

Instagram has a Facebook-style feed, in which you can view all the photos uploaded by yourself and the people who you follow on Instagram.

The latest version of Instagram for Android allows you to tag people in the photos you upload, in much the same way as you would with Facebook. This will then show up in their Instagram feed. Instagram supports geo-tagging so you can add your location and see where others took their uploaded pictures.

The best thing about Instagram are the filters included in the program. There are 20 to choose from (Lomo-fi, Earlybird, Lily, Apollo, Nashville, 1977...) with different color, brightness and lighthing effects. If chosen wisely, you can obtain really awesome results.

    Is Instagram complicated?

The Instagram app is very easy to navigate. There are icons at the bottom of the interface which represent the different features of Instagram: the photo feed, photo/user search, photo capture, news feed (recent activity on the network from you and those you follow), and profile settings. When viewing pictures on your profile you can choose to display as a list or as a series of tiles for easy navigation.

The presentation of the photos themselves in the photo feed is very clear, and likes and comments are shown underneath each picture. You can like or comment on a photo with a single click of an icon. However, it's a shame you can't open images full screen (i.e. you can only ever see them within the feed).

Applying filters and retouching your photos in Instagram is very simple. You can snap an image through the app or choose one from your phone then view live previews of what each effect will look like. Cropping and editing effects are basic but easy to apply and preview. Unforunatley there's no 'Undo' feature though so if you make a mistake you have to start right back from before you started editing.

    How does it perform?

So, is there a catch? The answer is unfortunately yes. Instagram saves photos at a maximum resolution of 600 x 600 pixels, which makes no sense since your iPhone or iPad's camera is capable of much better quality.

    The verdict

The Instagram app makes it easy to apply fun effects to your photos and share them with your friends. Although it requires you to sign-up to share images, the possibilities of pictures are vast.

    Photo Studio 1.2.7.129 - app

Photo Studio is a free photo editor for BlackBerry phones. It allows you to correct and adjust images, and apply effects to them while you're on the move.

You can use Photo Studio to edit photos that you take with the camera or that are stored on your BlackBerry already. Once you've loaded the image into Photo Studio it's very easy to work with. The current image is displayed on screen, with a toolbar underneath where you'll find all of Photo Studio's tools.

Among the settings you can tweak in Photo Studio are color, brightness, contrast, hue and saturation. Tweaking is generally done just by moving a slider left or right to adjust the levels. There are also tools for resizing, rotating, and cropping photos, plus a red eye remover.

Users will likely be impressed by the large range of image effects to choose from in Photo Studio, as well as all the different frames you can apply to your photos through the app. It would've been nice to have the ability to add text to images too, but hopefully this will be added to Photo Studio in a future release.

When you're done editing an image in Photo Studio you can either apply the changes you've made to the original image, or save it separately as a screen dimensions image to your memory card.

All in all, Photo Studio is great for making tweaks and corrections to photos you take on your phone.

    Plants vs Zombies 2 1.5.252752 - app

Plants vs Zombies 2: It's About Time is the sequel to the hugely popular horticultural-based tower defense game. Plants vs Zombies 2 is currently only available in the Australian and New Zealand Google Play Stores but will become available elsewhere later this year.

    Zombies with a time-travel twist

The idea of the game is to zap zombies through strategic gardening throughout different lands across the ages. There are three different worlds in total, including Ancient Egypt, Pirate's Booty and Big Bad Butte (a Wild West-themed world), giving Plants vs Zombies 2 lots of variety and helping to make it look and feel distinct from the first game.

There are several levels within each world, which you play through in order. You have the opportunity to unlock new levels within each world through in-app purchases. You need to collect stars by achieving objectives, which you'll need in order to unlock each world.

    Green-fingered warfare

The gameplay of Plants vs Zombies 2 is more or less exactly the same as the previous version. You have a collection of plants at your disposal which you need to use to prevent the zombies reaching your house. Sunflowers provide sun, which is the currency you need to use plants.

Many of the plants in Plants vs Zombies 2 will be recognizable to you if you've played the first version (pea shooters, cabbage throwers, exploding potatoes are some of the old favorites included in this sequel). However, there are a few new types of plant in Plants vs Zombies 2 to look out for, such as iceberg lettuces that freeze zombies, Bonk Choy that punches zombies, and Bloomerangm which fires petals at the enemy.

Although planting is at the heart of the gameplay in Plants vs Zombies 2, there are a couple of new additions to help in your zombie-crushing arsenal. The first is the availability of plant food, which you can give to a particular plant to beef up it's impact for a few seconds. For example, pea shooters will fire like machine guns, cabbages will go off like bombs and, handily, sunflowers will spit out lots of suns when you add plant food to them. Plant food is available by shooting specific zombies or by purchasing with game coins.

The other new innovation is power-ups. These are always available at the bottom of the screen for when times get tough, allowing you to obliterate zombies by pinching them to death, throwing them off the screen, or electrocuting them. It's a fun twist on the gameplay, though each power-up will cost you a lot of coins, so be sparing with them!

On the zombie front, the undead are as mean and moody as ever. The great thing about Plants vs Zombies 2 is that there are specific zombies for each level (e.g. mummified zombies for the Ancient Egypt level, and pirate zombies for the Pirate's Booty level). There's plenty of variety among the behavior of the zombies, so you'll need to learn the best way to deal with each one.

    Obliterating the undead

Anyone who played the first Plants vs Zombies should be able to pick up and play Plants vs Zombies 2 without having to relearn how it works. A tutorial level is available to walk you through the basics, but luckily you can skip this if you don't want to go through it.

Whenever a new gameplay element is introduced (plant food or power-ups, for example) you play through an interactive tutorial to get used to the controls. In the case of power-ups, controls are based around touch gestures, which are great fun. You can pinch zombies to squish them, hold and drag to throw them, or tap on them to frazzle them with electricity.

    Well manicured graphics

Plants vs Zombies 2 looks more polished than the first version of the game, and both the animation and the detail of the plants and zombies sprites have been shined. Its endearing comedic charm hasn't disappeared though and there's lots of hilarity to look out for in terms of the way zombies look and act and the humorous cut scenes that feature a running dialog between Crazy Dave and a time travelling caravan called Penny (don't ask, just play the game and find out!)

The soundtrack to Plants vs Zombies 2 is also an improvement on the first game. The classic theme tune remains, but it has an orchestral score, where the tune varies slightly between levels.

    The verdict

Although the gameplay hasn't been radically overhauled in Plants vs Zombies 2, the overall experience is more polished and more varied than the first game. It's the most enjoyable tower defense game for Android that you'll play!

    Temple Run 2 1.5 - app

Imangia Studios' sequel, Temple Run 2, is a great example of what to do with a second entry into an arcade series.

While the original Temple Run's visuals were a little stagnant, Temple Run 2 adds a lot of higher quality graphics and effects. The stages look and feel bigger, plus there's more variety in the levels as you progress.

Controls in Temple Run 2 are the same. You tilt to move horizontally, swipe up to jump, and swipe down to slide. To change directions left or right, you swipe in that direction. If you played the original, jumping into Temple Run 2 is easy.

There are some input detection issues with Temple Run 2 though. Occasionally when swiping to jump or slide, the game did not register and I crashed into a tree or wall. Other times, it would register a sideswipe incorrectly and I would lose. This can get frustrating especially when you have progressed far into a level.

Temple Run 2 also has power-ups and unlockable content that can be bought with coins earned in the game, or you can purchase currency with microtransactions. Temple Run 2 does not really force purchases, but taking the easy way out by buying a pack of coins is tempting.

If you enjoyed Temple Run, Temple Run 2 is going to eat all your free time.

    Photo Grid 4.552 - app

Photo Grid creates attractive photo montages out of your works of art. It's quick and really easy.

Just pick the photos you want to combine and PhotoGrid does all the work. The results look good, and you can make small changes to get them just how you want them (add frames, choose the type of montage, etc.).

Photo Grid's effects aren't amazing, but there are a few to choose from. There's also a simple image editor that will let you make small, basic changes, like tweaking the orientation.

    Badoo 2.25.2 - app

Badoo has been tested by Softonic, but it still doesn't have a review in English.

    SoundHound Full 5.5 - app

SoundHound is a music recognition app that will tell you what song you're hearing or thinking of.

You can use SoundHound by pointing your iPhone at the speakers while a song is playing, hum or sing the track, or perform a text search. We were very impressed by both the speed and the accuracy of SoundHound and found it faster and more reliable than its more famous rival, Shazam.

Once SoundHound has found the track it will pull up a wealth of information and resources relating to that song. You can stream the song, bookmark it, access related videos on YouTube, look up the lyrics, read artist biographies, and view other songs on the album. You can even share your discovery via email, Twitter, Facebook or SMS. If the track is available on iTunes you can click a button to take you directly to the page where you can buy it.

Despite having all of these features, SoundHound remains very simple to use. One tap of the large button is enough for SoundHound to start 'listening' to what's being played or hummed, and all of the track and artist resources are well organized.

The main thing lacking from SoundHound at the moment is support for multi-tasking in iOS 4. If a song playing on the radio and coming to an end, it can be frustrating having to wait so long for the app to open.

Overall, SoundHound is a very competent music recognition app that is a worthy alternative to Shazam.

    Tumblr 3.4.4.00 - app

Tumblr for Android allows you to share text, photos, videos, audio and more via your Tumblr blog.

Tumblr is a microblogging service designed for posting your thoughts and interesting things you find via tags, as well as reblogging others' posts and adding additional commentary of your own. Like Twitter, people can follow you to check out your updates. You can also follow others and view their posts from your dashboard.

    Adding content

This updated Android version of Tumblr makes it quick and easy to post to Tumblr, with a user interface heavily inspired by the service's iPhone app. In just a few clicks, you can add a post to your blog directly from your smartphone. Besides adding text, you can quickly post photos stored on your device or taken with your phone's camera, insert video captured on your phone and even record audio to upload to Tumblr. There are also options for inserting quotes, links and for chatting. Tumblr also gives you the option to post updates to Twitter simultaneously.

    Viewing your dashboard

You can also view the latest posts from your Tumblr feed and those of the people you're following, arranged into a scrollable timeline known as your Dashboard. The app lets you like or reblog a post from someone you're following. However, other sharing options are quite limited and, unlike on the Tumblr website, there's no way to reblog posts from people you're not following.

This app makes posting to Tumblr via your Android phone a snap, no matter how many Tumblogs you happen to have.

    Bible 4.3.7 - app

Flexible, easy to use and completely portable, Bible is an excellent way to access the Holy Bible from your Android phone.

Bible is really easy to read. Access the Bible icon from the homescreen, and tap the top bar to browse by book, chapter or version.Choose a verse, touch and hold to select and then you’ll be able to hit the little arrow in the bottom right to bookmark, share or copy. You’ll also be able to search for specific references.

What makes Bible a little bit special is the other features available on the app. Apart from it being really easy to browse your bookmarks, there’s also a Reading Plan feature, to help you get a more profound understanding of the Holy Book. Bible also lets you search for Bible Study groups by name or postcode, but this only seems to be available in the US.

Even better, you’ll be able to share Bible passages directly on Facebook or Twitter, or, if you’re offline, read the Bibles you’ve downloaded to the app. Bible doesn’t have that many configuration options, but as long as the basics cover your needs, it’s a great app.

Bible the best option around for Bible study on the go.

    Spotify 0.8.0 - app

Spotify is a music streaming app that lets you listen to millions of songs from your iPhone.

Already supremely popular as a desktop app for Windows and Mac PCs, Spotify's mobile app was once exclusively aimed at Premium subscribers. Now it's available to everyone, which places it squarely in competitive with other popular music discovery apps like Pandora.

This version of Spotify for iOS 5.0+ devices looks gorgeous and makes it easy to start enjoying Spotify on your iPhone. If you login via your Facebook account, you'll also be automatically be given a free 48 hour trial of Spotify's Premium service that lacks the ads and radio commercials of the free version.

Once installed, you can listen to anything from Spotify's huge and expanding library. You can sync with playlists you have on your desktop, create new ones, or just listen to albums, or artist selections. Unfortunately, it's not possible to browse music by genre or category, which would've been a nice addition for people who don't always know what they're looking for.

Spotify's iOS interface is really easy to navigate. Searching is simple, while song results are easy to browse and well organized. Any track you listen to can easily be added to playlists, which themselves are easy to edit, reorder, and shuffle. Album art looks crisp as well.

There is support for offline listening too, although obviously you can't use saved music in any other app. The Spotify app is also quite a battery drainer when you're streaming via 3G.

In addition, Spotify now also offers the ability to start a Radio station based on your favorite playlist, album, artist, or song. Much like Pandora, you can now also vote songs up or down, based on how much you enjoyed listening to it. Hopefully Spotify will learn your musical tastes over time.

Spotify really gives other music discovery apps a run for their money with its intuitive interface and impressive song library.
