YouTube 2.5.0 - app

The announcement of iOS 6 revealed that YouTube would be removed so Google has released a standalone YouTube app.

YouTube mirrors a lot of the same functionality as the Android version. You can watch videos, search for channels, and comment in the app. Playback is smooth and the video quality is excellent, especially on newer devices.

Signing into YouTube uses your Google account, but this allows you to like and share videos. Search options are also excellent because you can specify the amount of time and how the results are sorted like the browser version. Results show both videos and channels so you are able to subscribe to your favorite creators.

YouTube also allows for voice search using the same interface that Google uses for other Google products. The app runs very smooth and has a great polish that has been lacking from the native app.

With the most recent update, Google now offers an universal app to give the iPad a first-party app rather than the various third-party apps that released after the iPhone-only version. You can now stream through AirPlay, add and remove videos from playlists, and click links in video descriptions. The update is great for iPad users who have been waiting patiently.

YouTube is the definitive video streaming app for iOS.
